DIY tank around a metal frame?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if I could start a very shallow sandy, shallow cube.

Literally an aquatic zen garden.

I found a frame that is the perfect dimensions for this tank.
Attachment 140106

Attachment 140114

I removed the insulation piece from this.

It was previously used as an university art project. I snagged it as the kid was moving out

I could always saw off the unsightly 'legs'

It would be acrylic, I'd want to use black silicone lol.

Sure, why not? I would recommend putting the glass or acrylic INSIDE the metal frame though - metal frame under water could be very bad.

The only reason I can see for using the frame is to get away with thin glass or acrylic (using the frame foe strength). A DIY shallow tank that small could easily be all glass or acrylic, no frame at all.

I'd flip that frame upside down and use it as a mini-stand for an all-glass tank.

Those are both really good ideas lol.

An all acrylic tank would be nice.

I don't want it to be too high, though.

Thickness: 1/4"

Bottom = 8 " x 8"
Front = 8 " x 4 3/4"
Back = 8 " x 4 3/4"
2 Sides = 4 3/4 " x 7 1/2"
Top Front/Back brace = 7 1/2 " x 2"
Top Sides brace = 7 1/2 " x 2"

Those would be the dimensions, according to a very helpful calculator online.

This seems like it would be a very nice build.

I love the frame and would love to see what it looks like when you are done.

For acrylic check out home depot. You can buy a sheet large enough to make a tank that size for around $15-20. Pick up a plastic cutter/scoring tool while you're there and some solvent
here here
. Watch some videos, it's pretty easy to do.

Thanks! So it will cost a lot because I don't have appropriate tools.

What if I gave someone my dimensions? Are there any cutting services? See I don't need a full sheet. Lol

It's not a lot... the scoring tool is maybe $4 or so. Check out http://www.eplastics.com/ though, they will cut pieces to dimension for you and if you tell them it's for an aquarium they will make sure the dimensions are dead on.

Thanks!

I'm literally thinking pool filter sand, rocks, moss, 2-5 neocardinia shrimp and in the middle, a glass for my wabi Kusa

This would come out to somewhere around 1 gallon. Not enough room for any fish in my opinion :P

Thanks!!! I checked them out quick. Would it be better to order online or by phone?

It seems like you've done this before, would you know the best place to get acrylic glue? Isn't that what we use in DIY acrylic tanks?

Or wait... Is the solvent the glue? Lol!! Sorry I'm NOT a DIY person, so pardon my ignorance.

for a small cube you could go to the local glass repair shops and just give them the demensions. I had someone give me a 46 bowfront with a broken side pane I had it cut for like $10 so for a few small pieces it should be fairly inexpensive.
