Starting over?

Tank set-up
40-b
Dual 36" T5 HO
Penguin 350 and aquatech 5-15
Miracle Grow Potting mix capped with Fine black Sand from petco
cheap c02 setup
Cheap 200 watt heater, water at 78-80

I cannot seem to get rid of my discolored water in my. I do 10-25% water changes weekly. I've tried purigen and it seemed to help, water changes make a big difference and 3 days later its nasty again. Its like in between tea and coffee.

I've got brand new filters as well. I had driftwood but took that out 3 weeks ago. I would think things would start to clear up by now. I dont think my tank is fully cycled either.

Is it possible its something with my substrate? Im to the point of ripping everything out and starting over.

It may be the potting mix, if there's wood in it, due to the tannin browning the water-

"Try not to use soil with wood shaving as it may cause more organic breakdown and lots of tannins being released."

It's definitely the soil. It will clear up with what you are doing with water changes. Although also, I'm using 3 bags of Purigen

Hoping it clears up soon. I have a bag of 250ml of purigen I regenerated that I need to put back in my Penguin350. It was literally almost black in a week.

Frustrating that any time I make progress the water browns again real quick.

I hope you filtered the soil for large pieces. I take a strainer and only use the fine soil. Also having a 2"+ cap is essential.

I forgot to add in my previous post, I've used API Bio-Chem Zorb. That will really clear up your tank, it's a mixture of activated carbon and resins. A little expensive and cannot be regenerated like purigen, only lasts about 3 months depending on your tank size.
