What is my light level?

I'm setting up a low tech 55 gal (48x13 that is 20" deep) tank which has a Fugeray 48" light. I was working on some customized plumbing and DIY spraybar which is now complete and it's time to start ordering some plants.

My substrate will be 2" at front to 3" at the back. The light will sit on it's default arms ~1" over the water.

I've seen some people say this would be a medium light.. others low. I want to get the right plants for my setup.

The PAR data is provided by Lowe here:

I'm not sure how PAR equates to high/med/low light levels as plants tend to be categorized. Nor do I exactly understand the distance axis on the chart. According to http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=160396 can I assume medium lighting?

I assume taller plants would have different light values than say a moss or more of a carpet type plant due to their depth from the light source?

And what effect does indirect light from say a window with plantation blinds that looks out on a covered porch of a north eastern facing home have on this?

Thank you

You'll be on the low end of medium.

Not to hijack your thread..... but this is exactly what I was thinking of doing. I am torn between the Fugeray and the Ray 2. I am getting conflicting answers of the need for CO2 with the Ray 2. Could I continue to use Flourish / Excel/ root tabs or would I need to get a CO2 system if I did the Ray 2?

What size is your tank? I have a ray 2 on my 29 gallon. I definitely needed co2.

Sorry! It is a standard 55 gallon, just like the original poster's.

With the ray 2 you'd likely need to either raise the fixture or add co2. Per the chart they issued you'd be in the upper 60s maybe even the low 70s with the ray 2.
