What would you recommend to do if the fish/inverts are coming from hard water and going into soft water?
I've recently lost shrimp and snails using drip acclimation and am hesitant to try that again.

Thank you for this! I always seemed to have more issues with floating and could see them getting more stressed as it went on. I never understood the process of what happens in the bag when you open it. I will be using this method from now on! First try will be on my Amanos and Nerites coming from you tomorrow!

I honestly plop and drop everything, butit is harder on them into soft water. If you were dealing with particularly sensitive species, I would do a very very very slow drip acclimation over a full day. Snails generally don't do well in softwater anyway (with notable exceptions), as an aside.

Default my method

i'm no expert, but why is "drop and plop" preferable (less stressful?) than mixing shipping water 50/50 with tank water and hanging in the tank for a few hours? I usually leave them for 8-12 hours. My logic was that this makes the adjustment less severe, dilutes ammonia/replenishes oxygen in shipping water, and allows temp to equalize. Does this just result in the critters adjusting twice, rather than once via drop and plop?

very good info, thanks! i think what i did was too involved:

1) float the bag, but open the bag first, drop some prime in, then use a clip to clip the bag to the side of the tank so it'll stay floating and the bag water stays out of the tank

2) after the bag is tank temperature, do my weekly water change. the 20 percent water that's in the bucket now? dump the bag with fish and bag water all into that bucket.

3) wait 30 minutes so the fish get used to that new tank water with that old bag water still around in the bucket.

4) net out the fish and plop 'em in the tank.

I did 4 neons from an LFS like this last week after being in a bag for an hour, all 4 happy and healthy still. But seeing as how ten CPD are incoming this week via 2-3 day shipping, I'm just going for this immediate drop and plop idea this time around!

I do a speedier version of the drip....

I put the fish/shrimp in a container with the bag water and remove about 10% off the old water and add 10% tank water ever 5-10 min.. the process generally happens over 45 to an hour ish depending on what else is distracting me.. so it may be too quick for some but i have never had an issue with this method.

Question

Is there a date for when you will be making the Ft. Lauderdale appearance? I would be interested in attending that one

Today I did a mass immediate plop and drop of 10 CPD and 5 pumpkin shrimp. They were shipped cross country so I didn't want to wait longer.

Result? All survived!

How long should the tank and room stay dark?
