New to the area and to the hobby

Hey everyone. Just moved to thornhill and found myself in need of some peace and serenity. Decided to get a tank and try to go planted. Just looking for someone to talk to and possibly get some sound advice.
Tank is only three weeks old and is still cycling. Nitrite levels are spiking now, not sure how much longer before its finished.
65gallon tall, pool filter sand substrate, 36" T5 HO 39 watts x2.
Started with a lot of plants and some serpae tetras. Decided to see how it does without cO2 but am using seachem excel and trace elements.
Lots of contradicting info on the net and was wondering if anyone had success without cO2

Kind of wondering how the sand thing is working for you. Are you using root tabs? I did a diy yeast thing for co2 and its bubbling on a ladder..but the drop checker isn't indicating much change in co2 level. I'm adding Excel, liquid carbon too.
I'm waiting to see how the co2 diy works out. Hello by the way.
