the 40g i have is drilled on the side. it's actually an old petco tank. I plan on having a piece of glass cut to put on top and use weather stripping to seal it.

so water goes in and out through bulkheads on the side, giving me the ability to close it up and basically make a big canister out of it.

Just ordered the 30" Finnex Ray2 Slim Daylight for the tank instead of using the over powerful metal halide..

I know there's a lot of canister fans on here however my reef background has taught me a lot about having a sump not just for water flow but for more options on filtration, dosing, water changes and many other things...

I'm considering an extra custom 15g sump with extra media as well as a little more water capacity to help ease fluxuations in parameters.. it also makes water changes easier on the environment..

i'd drill the tank if you're doing a sump. so much cleaner.

Just going to paint the back of the tank black against the wall so all you will see is the clear overflow inside..

Well, after reading a ton and really trying to keep the look I wanted, I did go with the HOB filter using some poly supports, it doesn't even pull back on the glass really at all.. I am definitely going to change out the heater and go with a more clear smaller heater then just cover it up in the back with driftwood and plants..

The LED Ray2 fixture looks good on it and my wife found an awesome piece for it to sit on at 36" high which is what we wanted.. here's a few photos before really doing much scaping at all yet just a few ferns, wisterias, and ribbons to start - I'm finishing my DIY CO2 today if the diffuser comes in
