Initial CO2 set up parameters ?

Just ordered my complete ultimate CO2 system from AP (Carbon Doser, pH controller, ext5000 reactor, 20 lbs tank). Any suggestions on initial set up of the CO2 system in my 135gal to battle the green dust algae (i.e. what pH to target, bps, bubble sizes in the reactor, position/flow angle of circulation pump in tank)? You can see all of my tank specs on my tank profile page. I'll hopefully have nitrate data tomorrow or early next week when my test kit arrives.

There are just too many factors to consider when it comes to pH, bubbles per second, etc.

Ideally, you want to maximize the time the CO2 bubble has contact with water (before it floats to the surface of the water), giving it more time to dissolve. The reactor should help you accomplish this.

You may want to purchase a drop checker to be able to estimate the level of CO2 in your water column (to ensure you are reaching ~30 ppm).

pH controllers are fun. I basically set mine to ~1.2 pH lower than what the tank water sits at without CO2 injection. Seems to be plenty for the plants. Of course, that's at what would probably be considered medium lighting (four t8 48" lamps on my 55g long)

Ooo, new toys!

I wouldn't start out with the controller set at 1.2 points below the pH of the tank water, start with more like .5-.8 and only if you are going to be able to stick around and check the tank often that whole day. I have gassed fish in 5 minutes and in 8 hours with different aeration and needle valve tweaks. I bet 1.2 points is a good amount of CO2 but the amount you can safely inject depends on the aeration of the water as well. You may think there is a great ripple on the surface and loads of oxygen and your fish disagree. Then every couple days tweak the controller a tenth of a point or so until you are over 1 point and then slow down to less than that.

If the plants aren't getting the basic nutrients all the nice CO2 and light you give them won't help though. Until I learned about dosing nitrate and phosphate I had green algae, green water, green spot algae and more. Those aren't a problem now. See the sticky in the Fertilizer forum for how tos.
