Is my CO2 tank broken?

I have recently bought a 10lb CO2 tank from CL. But there are air leaking out of the knob on the top whenever I turn it on. Is this normal? I tried turning it on all the way and various tightness, but there is always a leak. Am I doing something wrong?

It is probably not leaking from the top but from your connection. You may need a plastic or brass fitting to go between the male and female connections from tank to regulator

No, I have a plastic fitting between connectors. I'm sure the leak is from bottom of the knob.

There may be a reason why it was up on CL...
Take it to a welding shop or brewing supply house and see if they can help you. The valve may have leaky seals. Not sure about the seals, but I know the valves are replaceable as a whole unit.

Default Is my CO2 tank broken?

You're better off buying a new tank. I bought a Pepsi cola tank recently off cl, $80 for a good condition 20# tank is a great deal, however no one told me that hydro testing it was nearly impossible if you aren't affiliated with Pepsi, they said they'd try anyway and to call in two weeks to see official they'll even test the tank. He also said that the people that test it might not even send the tank back because it's Pepsi. Long story short Craigslist isnt worth it, ended up buying a filled 20# aluminum with brand new hydro for $120

Airgas will typically swap the tanks for a nominal refill charge. Something less than $20 for a 10lb cyl.

If it is your tank that is leaking bleed it down till its empty and trade it for another one at a welding supply company, or a gas supply. I trade my tanks out instead of refilling them, The tank I bought was beat and looked like it had been used as a hammer at one point in its life, I took it in swapped it out for a filled one, 17 bucks.
