eye issue

I have a 40 gallon planted dirt tank with a new piece of driftwood which seems to be leaking tannins like crazy. Hopefully within a few water changes over the progressing weeks will solve that issue....

Anyways i have 4 guoramis and bullhead cat in the tank. I've noticed the eyes on several of the guoramis are red and in-flammed. One has almost a cloudy look?

What is causing this? Im getting my water tested tomorrow as I dont have a kit yet. Im thinking my ph may be to low?

Could be cloudy eye, or similar fungal infection. Water changes, and proper water parameters can usually clear it up in a week or 2, but since there's signs of stress i'd say a bottle of pimafix would work to speed up recovery faster. If your using carbon i'd remove it if using pimafix

When testing the water make sure to read the directions to use the kit accurately, certain tests have certain means of using it correctly, and the API master kit is a good one to get. Post your test results when your done, it can be related to other things too, just to be safe.

Prime will not fix your issue, it will only dechlorinate and offer additional slime coat. Your tank is not cycled yet and you should prepare to deal with a potentially fatal situation. How long has the tank been set up for?

The bottle of seachem prime says right on the bottle it will lower nitrite and ammonia and can be used in emergency situations with a dose of up to 5 times. Unless this is simply marketing hogwash

And yes you are correct my tank has not been cycled. Its been up about 10 days.

Ive moved an older filter off a more established tank and placed it on the back overnight in hopes it will help. Just plants in it right now Im sure it will be fine overnight.

I am going to do a PWC tomorrow before work and clean some fallen leaves up from the plants.

All I need is a little luck now and thanks for the responses guys!!! much appreaciated

I would've put that cycled filter on there at the start of the tank. That way you wouldn't have that problem.

It binds ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates so that they become harmless, but it's like putting on a bandaid. Being a new tank, I wouldn't suggest using prime for ammonia and just remove the fish until the cycle is done.

The cycled filter is only good for 15 gallons.... I did add a liquid bacteria when I started the tank.

The fish seems to look better this morning or maybe I am seeing things. Time will tell.

How long does it take for a cycle to take place?

til your readings show 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite , and 5-20ppm nitrate stability. No set time, just water parameter results
