My water chemistry issue sorted itself out, with a little help from me. I let the tank rest for a bit and then I decided it was time to pick up some more fish! I bought some Rams and some Cardinals. The Rams were acting all crazy; either pairing or being territorial, I am not sure. I've never had Rams before. I tried to document it the best I could.

And now for the crazy Ram behavior I was telling you about...

Often, with cichlids it's a fine line between courting and fighting. Not 100% sure whether you have a pair or not - usually the females have very pink bellies when they're riled up (eating, fighting, breeding, or just thinking about any of the above). You may have a pair, or two males. Just keep an eye on them, you may have to separate them if things get out of hand, which can happen even if they are male/female.

Nice tank, BTW! Rams and cardinals are one of my favorite combos.

Ah cool, thanks for that info. I found an article on how to properly identify the sex of these rams but even after reading it, it's hard to tell. There are two who stick together and hide in the back of my tank inside a bunch of plants, I'm wondering if they're a pair. I think the other 2 are females...I think.

This is the article:

This video will help considerably with ID's. Do you have a 3-4" flat rock to lay on the bottom somewhere that the "maybe" pair can feel secure and possibly breed upon.

Good luck!

Oh that's not real pearling, it's just oxygen bubbles from water changes. The bubbles stick for days if not disturbed. I don't run CO2. I just dose with Excel and Iron. Plants do grow like crazy though. So no need for CO2 thus far.

Imi, thanks for that link!

I have new pics today! I've done a bit of work on the tank this morning, took out most of the cabomba. I have decided that I hate it. It's a weed. I still have some in there but it won't be there for long. I took most of the stuff to Fish Doctors today and gave it to them, along with some red myrio trimmings.

Anyway, there is much to report...

The Red Ludwigia and Red Ammania are starting to get some more color and a lot of new growth! I am so excited about this, I think these two are my favorite plants ever.

Just look at this stuff it's gorgeous!

Oh and check out this GIANT tiger lotus leaf. This stuff is exploding too. You can't really tell how big this thing is, but it's probably about 7 inches long. Huge!

Now for the ugly. This side of the tank sucks, imo. I'm taking out that cabomba in the back. Take a look...What should I put there instead? Let me know

Thanks guys

First off do you have some eggs there. Cory's in that one photo?

Secondly, Maybe replace the Cabomba with some contortionist val. or other tall strap like plant densely planted of course. Or even Aponogeton boivninanus, A. Ulvaceus 3-4 bulbs of either.

Oh no those aren't eggs, those are just bubbles. Did a water change earlier

I will look those plants up, thanks for the suggestion!

Hehe, nope no cory's in this tank. Although I was considering some when I was at the fish store. I think I have enough fish in there though. Don't wanna overdo it!

Maybe replace the cabomba with nothing; leave it with just the myrio. Or maybe a wall of jungle val?

WELL! Hello everyone. I haven't been around in a while. Some news about my tank...

The past 2 weeks have been bad; I've been dealing with some health problems, and as such, my tank suffered a great deal. I was unable to give it the time and attention that I usually did, and it caused a whole bunch of problems. I was happy that, while there were other issues, my water chemistry remained perfect...but I got...

Algae! BGA, GHA, diatoms. I was able to keep up with my water changes but I was not able to siphon out rotting plant goo at the bottom or just do other types of maintenance and whatnot, so the best I could do at the time was cut down my photo period. This helped with the algae but my plants suffered. The Red Ludwigia (which I LOVED) had nearly melted from lack of light, and I lost a few stems of it. The Rotala Wallichi melted as well. I suspect the fact that I wasn't home to dose the tank with the usual Excel/Iron was also an issue. I was unable to do much about it, being in and out of the hospital and all.

SO I'm back at home now, nursing myself back to health... and now I can start nursing my tank to health! I did a major cleaning. Chopped down the crazy Water Sprite that had taken over, and was shading a bunch of other plants. Moved a few plants around to help them get more light, and stuff like that. I am currently working on the algae problem which seems to be getting much better with my "algae plan" - basically just a lot of physical removal, water changes, and big Excel doses. All said and done, my tank looks pretty terrible right now but I suspect a solid recovery. I'll post some pics after the tank recovers. I'd rather not show it in such a sorry state!

Sigh, I hope none of you guys ever get stuck in a hospital for a while with nobody to care for your tank. It's bad news, believe me.

Sorry to hear about your health, If the algae is really bad you might try the h202 flash method.
