Help please! Fluval Spec 5 for Shrimp

Hi everyone! I am new to the forum and am really wanting to set up my first tank. I have been doing a lot of research and want to set up a Fluval Spec 5 for shrimp. I would like to stick with low light plants and try to use the lamp that comes with the tank. For substrate I was thinking of using the Fluval Shrimp Stratum.

My first question is what plants should I consider? I know the common ones like Java Moss and was thinking of Marimo Balls. Then I also wanted to use either driftwood or stones as the hardscape.

My second question, is since I do not have a cycled tank to get plants/rocks/driftwood from and everything will be new, how do I cycle it? WHat conditioners or additives will I need? I have heard adding snails first can help to start a cycle. Any other tips?

Does this sound like an ok start? I am open to suggestions! Also, where do you buy your stones and/or driftwood? Sorry for all the total newbie questions! I just want to try to do this right!

Thanks so much for the extensive list! That gives me MUCH more to choose from than the regular lists I have seen of Java Fern, Java Moss, and Anubias

As for the plants, where do you get them? Any reliable sources? I have been looking on ebay and Bob's Tropical Plants so far. Any other good places? I am hoping to get some that won't be loaded with snail eggs. While I would like a snail or two I was thinking of rabbit snails!

There are several sites with decent reviews. Bob's, LiveAquaria, Aquariumplants.com, ebay, aquabid (primarily paypal) etc.. Also, this forum has a great trade/sell section I would consider first if you use paypal. You'll generally get better pricing on the forum, especially on shipping.

Personally, I've used liveaquaria, aquabid and this forum's trade/sell section, and have had great results.

As far as snails go, get used to them Most website vendors will have snails in their plants, as well as most members. Some members however do have snail-free tanks, so inquire before buying. But realistically, you're probably going to end up with snails. They can be controlled by not over-feeding or with the use of assassin snails (small chance they eat shrimp if no snails are available).

In regards to cycling, there are countless methods. When I don't have an established tank to steal from, I just drop some fish food into the tank and let it do its thing before I add fish. There are countless methods though, so do a search for "cycling" if you would like more info.

Hope this helps.

You could honestly just throw in a table shrimp and wait until that decomposes
