I had a friend make a pico canister out of a aquapump, a small container of matrix, and a small bottle filled with filter floss. It is running on a .5 gallon tank and the tank is crystal clear. it has cpd's and crystal reds in it. He used .25" ID hard airline tube for the piping.

if I get a chance I'll go by his place and take some pics of it.

Capacity-wise and with the best flow when in a cabinet, probably an Eheim 2211. For on-the-desk use, something like a ZooMed or Tom's Rapids filter.

I vote for the Finnex PX-360. That's what I'll be using on my nano.

This new eheim looks interesting, but I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. Look forward to seeing it in action

the addiction continues...

I saw that 'coming soon' message 6 months ago. I do like the concept but that 2 in 1 intake/outflow assembly looks bulky for a nano and might take some flexibility away.

I have heard some bad reviews on those Tom Rapids.

Could a person use smaller inlet / outlet pipes and just control the flow from a normal canister? Is there a model that varies in flow rate so you can use it on 6 gallons to 12 - 20 gallons?

There are many canister filters with adjustable flow: Eheim and Fluval are just two that I remember atm.
