Wondering if canister vacuum that was used for a band of turtles.....

Be okay to be used for filtration once the original owner relocates the turtles?

I forget what size the tank is but most likely a 55G or 75G. I'm pretty sure it's Fluval canister.

Once every 2-3 weeks, the sludge that he has to clean out of the tubes that the turtles create, has him concerned that it may harm the future "shrimp" inhabitants.

I told him it should be fine & he shouldn't have to DISCARD the canister.

  • What do you guys think?
  • Safe or not safe?

Bleach it, rinse well, dechlorinate, should be good. If nothing else, might need some new hoses if current ones are all crudded up.

Thanks Nub,

I need to see this turtle sludge when I stop by his place. I'm sure it can be cleaned out with flexible pipe cleaning wires & then blast the tubes with one of those TV steam cleaners.

Wouldn't the toxicity issues of reptile urine still be an issue if it has soaked into any of the plastics or hoses?

Isn't there a reason tanks used for reptiles shouldn't be re-used for fish, since the urine soaks into the silicone?

Default Wouldn't a thorough rinsing fix that?

In addition to some carbon in the filter?

I wondered about that toxicity as well.

Not sure what kind of food friend's been feeding those turtles since he's setup the tank & if he's used medications to treat any turtle related illnesses.

Once the turtles are gone, ideally it will be turned into a planted shrimp tank.

I changed mouse tanks into shrimp tanks before without any issue and some of the build up before I washed it- not pretty. heh Never had a problem with shrimp dying from the tanks though.

I turned a poison dart frog tank into a shrimp tank. It was my best breeding tank yet. Maybe there's something special about PDF pee.
