Utilizing what I have around the house

I am an indoor plant grower. Peppers and stuff like that. I have one of these lying around
Amazon.com: Hydrofarm JSV4 4-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System: Patio, Lawn & Garden Amazon.com: Hydrofarm JSV4 4-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System: Patio, Lawn & Garden

It is a bit long but if I picked up a 20 gallon long which should be around 30" (right?) would this light pump out enough for a heavy planted tank? It is probably too wide for a standard 20 gallon high but at 4' wide I think I could try it with a tank but I will have some wasted light on each side. Maybe Ill put some flowers around the outside of my tank. Any toughts? I would assume it is in the 5k-7k range. I just checked it is approx 54watts.

Pick up a 40 breeder or 55 at the Petco dollar per gallon sale (I really like the 40B footprint). Read up on what type of substrate, fertilization and filtration you want to use and remember to start a tank journal( I want to see how this progresses)!

Thanks for the reply Saint. I live on a 2nd floor apartment in a development and my landlord said no bigger than 20 gallons. To be honest I am nervous about 20. I know glass breaks are rare but I can't imagine having one. I figure 20 gallons isn't too much weight when stuck into a corner on a support wall but it is the remote possibility of a break that concerns me. I would be responsible for damages. I am 31 and I have kept aquariums off and on for years (50 gallons or better) and never heard of one but .....

Anyhow, I still can't decide on a light. I am kind of broke so $20 for a 20 gallon isn't bad and I already have 50Lbs of Eco-Complete and a Fluval C3 HOB filter so it is the tank and stand and light holding me up. I just want to get the tank up and plant it heavy right off the bat and in a month or 2 add my stock. PetCo has a 20 gallon and stand for $119 after the sale price and it comes with a single T5 hood. It is a basic 20 gallon tall and single fluorescent without filter. I would rather use my C3 anyhow. Can a single tube pump out enough light for a 20 gallon deep?

BTW I checked out your tank journal on your 36 gallon. Fantastic. I think I might go with a heavy planted tank and a single school of tetras and some shrimp and snails. Although I really like those Rams you have. All of my other tanks were Oranda Goldfish but I wouldn't put even just one in a 20 gallon. I had one named Carl for almost 15 years and the guy was a pig. I kept him with silk plants because he ate anything live I put in there.

Thanks for the feedback on my journal(4 month update due any day)!

I would also look on CL for deals, but close to a hundred for the stand alone is a bit high(with the $1 per gallon sale). Are you handy? 2x4's and some 3/4 plywood can look nice and is way more substantial than most chain store stands.

A 20 Long would look great with plants on either side under that light you have!

Well I caved in and bought some stuff.

20 gallon tall for $20, 24" hinged glass lid for $20, stand for $60 and some ferts and liquid carbon and stuff (buckets, gravel vac (although I probably should not vac much), thermometer etc.. necessities)

That light is the one from earlier in the post. I'm going to figure the strength with it suspended about an inch from the lid and work from there. I will put some stands on the side with tomatoes or something to make sure that extra light does not waste
Also in the back is the Fluval C3 filter. The bulb on the light says it is 54 watts so I am wondering if I will have to mess with it much. I will find plants to buy somewhere in the next couple of days and take it from there. I can't believe how much plants run at PetCo. I asked the lady there her opinion on plants and I think I embarrassed her. She seemed new and like she was upset with herself for not knowing. I tried to be like "ahh no biggie" but oh well. I thought they would have a better selection. All of their plants seemed pretty basic but a large "aqua fern" (as they label them) was like $10.99 I didn't expect those kinds of prices on plants. Are there any online dealers with fast shipping times and ok prices?

I would look for what is available for sale on the forum. I have heard good things about Aquatic Jungles for an online store. As far as big box store plants, I had great success with the packaged Bacopa and Crypts from Petsmart.

Whatever you choose Good Luck. I will be following along! If you have any questions post them up (use the search function to look for an answer first), most questions will be answered quickly by one of the many, many awesome users of this forum.
