Ei?
I have a question. Every were they talk about EI its mostly for high light tanks. Even on this site, the regemins are for high light. Some one suggested using the "tank (2)" schedule from this site, because of the low light condition. So what do you think?
OH! I will have a 75g with 1.5wpg. Low watts because I will have discus. I would really like to have a good handle on dosing so I don't have any problems. I figure I can learn form others mistakes so I don't make any. Or at least not as many.

I just set up a tank with 4 x 1000W MH's with Discus, I had Discus and bred them with 4 w/gal of MH';s, they don't mind the light if you provide cover for them.
At 1.52 w a gallon, I set up a very nice heavily stocked Discus tank with 150 gal and have excellent gloss and full plant growth. CO2 is added(much mor ethe critical issue than light). It's not hard to do a nice tank with less light. Just dose 2x a week instead with the same routines suggested for full EI. 50-60% water changes. Fish are fat and healthy, tank is stable and nice. Plantbrain,i have a 75 gal tank,220 watts of light that has been on co2 forever.i decided to try out the tank as a low tech tank.i still use same dosage program as before discontinuing co2,but use excell instead.7 capfulls at 50% water change and 3 caps every other day.i don't have any hard plants to grow,(crypts, anubias, and a beautifull cardinal plant, tall form).has been off co2 diet for about a month, and tank looks better than before..is this just a quirk?regards, cornhusker

Try going to 2 cheap 2x40w shop lights and triton bulbs.
You have a lot of light even for Excel. Regards, Tom Barr

Tom,
Why do you think 1.5wpg is too much light for Excel or even a low tech tank for that matter? I'd read a article you wrote on non-co2 thanks and in it you recomend 1.5 to 2wpg. Barr Report - Non CO2 methods Has you recommendation changed on that? I have a 75 gal myself with 1.45 wpg and i'm having some problems with algae but I think my problem is that I didn't start off with enough plant mass. Thanks in advance |

I think Tom was referring to cornhusker's "Plantbrain,i have a 75 gal tank,220 watts of light".
That's ~2.9 WPG
