Galvanized pipe: Yup, it is overkill from a load bearing standpoint but it looks pretty cool and, once you get the hang of it and if you are good with measuring, it is really easy to work with. Attached is a photo of a stair rail I made. Flange is screwed in to the wooden framing behind the drywall and it takes an immediate 90 degree turn. The other photo shows pipes (2) rising up from behind a tank. I was going to do a 90 degree turn and bring the pipe out 10" - 14" over the tank and then put a cap on it. I figured I'd drill a couple holes and suspend the fixture from stainless steel wires over the tank. But I changed my mind.

jeremy va - if you have more pics of the tank & water pipe light support, I would be interested in seeing them. Thank you.

...never thought of using fishing string.

How do you actually attach the string to the fixture?

I have a 48" ray2 led fixture that I want to hang when I move my setup to another area of the house, but am searching for ideas on how to go about actually hanging it since there aren't any solutions that are obvious to me.

But, the fixture is extremely light and some 8lb line should be more than enough... are you using some sort of eyelets on the fixture? just looping the string around the whole fixture? etc.
