I need a re-introduction to Shrimp Keeping....

I would define my experience in Fresh Water as long but not very experimental (ie. I never even knew about live aquatic plants) when I was a kid. When I got the chance I eagerly hoped into Saltwater and from there into Reef Tanks and never looked back. I've tried to re-introduce myself into Freshwater, especially with Shrimp but there are many things I don't think I've grasped quite yet.

What parameters should I care about (regardless of the type)?

How to I obtain the correct levels? (Ie. RO water, minerals, peat, plants etc.)

What do I feed them?

Maintenance/Water Changes?

if someone could help me out that would be much appreciated. I feel like these past 2 years in the FW hobby for me has been clouded with Ignorance that I was actually going somewhere, when in reality, I still haven't even been able to keep a successful Cherry colony(as in more than 7)....
