API water hardnes test results?

I'm having trouble understanding what my API gh/kh test results are. The chart is in clear to me. I'm having to put more then 10 drops to get the color to change. So I know my water is very hard.

Hello zack...

Unless you keep and breed rare fish species, you don't need to worry about the pH, hardness, etc. of your tap water. These things aren't really important. The vast majority of aquarium fish will adapt to most public tap water supplies. All you need to do is treat the tap water to remove ammonia, chlorine and chloramine.

It's possible your water really is very hard.

It's also possible you have an expired test kit. Of the tests I've used, the API GH/KH is the most likely to fail if past the expiration date, and it always fails by requiring an excessive amount of drops to change color. So check that date.

Many fish stores offer free testing of critical water parameters if you bring in a sample. While GH/KH may not be on the normal list of parameters, I think many employees would be willing to open a fresh GH/KH test in store if they don't have one already set aside, then perform the tests for you, if asked nicely. (And if they have no further need of the kit, but you do, you could purchase the freshly opened kit.)

Write down the result. In the future if you retest, and the numbers are much higher by comparison, then you have possible reason to doubt the test.

If my API GH test results were correct I could walk on water.

Thanks I will pick up digital testers from here on out. Got any brands you recommend?

I do not believe there are consumer-level electronic testers for water hardness.

Have you found a more reliable test kit?

No. I just stoped worrying about it.
