stability using peat and/ or alder cones

I understand that stability is key for the health of our aquatic friends. I am trying to keep a community 55g tank and would like to soften the water up with peat but dont understand how this is done while not having fluctuations. Any help?

Keep a 5gallon bucket with one stocking stuffed with 100% PURE Sphagnum Peat Moss. Depending on current pH, and pH of stocking peat moss in bucket, but adding that 5gal every other week should not be an issue.

Do you use CO2?

How about distilled water?

I do inject co2 but do not use ro. 50% water changes weekly would get pricey. I have neen looking into ro units tho. Just dont like that my ph right out of the tap is 7.8. Gonna try cardinal tetras and would like to have their systems not have to work as hard. The co2 of course goes off with the lights which then turns on an airstone
