Question

Aqueon glass top too short

Bought a aqueon top and both sections are just 1mm on either side on the trim.
How can I make it safer to have the glass on there?

It sounds like the aquarium is not an Aqueon brand which explains why the glass top doesn't fit properly. If you don't want to return it for the correct brand, you might be able to use the plastic slide on strip from those clear front book report holders.

This is correct, I used an Aqueon glass top on a walmart brand 10g and it is not a perfect fit (front to back, even with the plastic strip). The lip on the top rim seems to be smaller I think.

Well, ended up using a section of telephone wire and ran it under the rubber section that allows it to open and close for support.
I have no idea what brand the tank is, got it used and there was nothing on it to say who made it.

I understand the problem with getting used tanks and trying to figure out what brand lid will fit the tank.

If the lid is too short on the long ends of the canopy, you can buy the clear plastic back strip and cut it to fit your tank length. Be sure to buy the correct size, it comes in 1/8" and 3/16", depending on the glass thickness.

I'm using a glass top from a 10 gallon on a 20L tank. The 20L is just a grow out tank, so I didn't want to buy a new glass top when I already had a top that I wasn't using. I just cut a piece of glass for each end, about 6" wide. The 10 gallon top just rests on these instead of the tank trim. Works great.

If you've never cut glass before, it's quite easy. Just need an inexpensive glass cutter and some sandpaper to to smooth the edges after you cut it.
