Question

Where can a newbie get plants?

(If I posted this in the wrong place, I appologize!)

Newbie here, joined not too long ago. Wife and I are trying to go from a "generic" lightly planted tank (aponogetons and odd swords) to a larger, more lush looking tank. What I've got so far:

  • Previously established 15g tank with good bio-filter (3yrs old)
  • 24" T5-HO twin bulb fixture
  • 24" 3 strip modular LED fixture (old tank)
  • Fluval 105 canister filter
  • 40lbs Eco Complete (ordered, on the way)
  • 37g tall cube tank (this is going to be the new tank)
  • Flourish, and Excel
  • API Freshwater test kit
  • In tank UV filter with pump
We're not opposed to CO2, but don't have a setup for it yet.

The big issue is that our local LFSs don't carry a lot of plants. We have Petco, and then a few non-chain stores.
Can anyone recommend a few online store that sells a great variety of plants? I keep running into Tropica and some others, but they don't sell to the US.
Basically, looking for some good stores that you folks frequent, and that are either based in North America, or ship to the US.

Also, I welcome any suggestions that you might think would be helpful.
Thanks in advance!

I would recommend checking out the for sale section here. There are a few members who sell a good variety of plants and some members who will sell clippings from their tanks. It's usually a lot easier on your wallet for shipping and you'll know what you're getting.

Defiantly look at the RAOK and For Sale sections on the forum, great place to get plants. Always cheaper then buying them at a store.

I've used both of these places with success and no issues. http://www.freshwateraquariumplants.com/ http://www.azgardens.com/

For sale section here, plus:

http://www.liveaquaria.com
http://www.extraplant.us

Warning - shipping is pretty high at all the online stores I've come across. If you're buying a bunch of plants at once it's not so bad, but buying just one $5 plant can cost you $25 at some places.

I recommend posting in the WTB (want to buy) and listing the things you want. Members will start offering up plants and will be better deals than a store. Try to bundle to save on shipping. Good luck!

I've ordered plants and inverts/shrimp from AZGardens before but they aren't my first choice due to the high cost of shipping (unless you're buying large quantities) and their habit of substituting items without notice.

First place I look is generally here or a local group (for me, that's AAPE), followed by Aquabid.
