Pearl Gourami's, Angels, Bichirs open top tank?

I'm not expecting many on here to know about Bichirs with an open top tank....but could gourami's and angels be kept without needing a lid?

I'm contemplating it just cause it seems a lot of light is lost through the glass (I need to clean it but even then idk if that would still happen or not). If I went open top, I'd have to get a splash guard for my light but that's very do-able.

Thoughts and ideas?

Bichirs are likely to escape. They may not seem like jumpers, but to my experience, they need a lid.

I had all three, no top. Never had a fish jump out unless it was being bullied non stop or I was trying to net it without draining the tank first.
Bichirs ate all fish 1in or smaller, never jumped out.
Never had an Angel jump out.
Had two gourami jump out when they were being terrorized by another gourami. Never when with any other fish.
You should have a glass lid anyway to keep water from evaporating out.

Bichirs will get out to crawl around if they find out how. They are often cruising around all areas of the tank and like to "nap" in floating plants. They will taste everything atleast twice, so keep flowing finnage away from them. They're curious and an awesome sight at feeding time. They act like legless gators and thrash around tearing food apart.

I've had my 2 guys for 6 and 4 years respectivly.....the fact that they are chill with angels and gourami's and cichlids amazes me :P

I'll probably just keep the glass then....but any ideas on how to keep the glass looking nice and not having it block light?

I have had my birchir for 2 years. About 7 months ago he jumped out of the 36gal bowfront with lid on. Thats the only time he has leaped out. Now he is in a 55 gal. With 2 rainbow sharks, veil'd angelfish, chinese algae eater and a bunch of mystery snails with open top. He has only eaten my mollies. When i am late to feed him, he skims the top and then splashes me with water. Lol. With lid and bubbles, you will have to clean it every week. You can also get custom lids that are made of screen mesh. They will keep him in and not block alot of light.

I'd recommend a top for bichirs. I'm not sure about the others, but I'm pretty sure an Angelfish won't jump. I had a number of bichirs jump out of the tank. They weren't being bullied, it's just that they like to swim and torpedo themselves towards the surface to gulp air. Well, one night my bichir got out and dried up. Another day, my other bichir jumped out as it was surfacing. I found her under a stand next to the tank! Luckily she survived and I put her back in the tank. If you use glass tops or eggcrate, I would weigh it down.
