CO2 pipe under sponge-filter as diffuser?

The title kind of says it all..

I have my first DIY CO2 reactor brewing and got lots of bubbles, but I have a CO2-stair to diffuse them and they barely shrink before they have climbed it and float to the surface

Im thinking I could draw the remove the diffuser and draw the tubing directly under the sponge, in which it would diffuse and finaly get spewed out along with the filtrated water? Im using a canister filter btw, with a sponge on the intake
