Well seeing as how well this thread is being viewed and received I may do a build thread and document my steps with as much detail as possible.

A discus tank freaks me out. Aren't these really fragile fish? To be honest I haven't done much research on them because I always Hear how hard they are to keep happy.

I really want a nice ground cover and if its high light so be it. I don't think low light cover has same affect. They seem to grow taller than they do spread. And ideally I would want little leaves so from a few feet away it will look green and lush not leafy

Like stated above. So many options and potential it's hard to pick one. And what to do with all the plants I have? I spent quite a bit and would never recover the costs. And two tank might be a little too much.

If I go with a aquascape/hard scape like a African landscape I will keep fish small an to a minimum. Maybe some cardinals or something. So many options.

Mangrove style I might be able to put my old fish in there

I'd seen this pic before, and it reminded me of another 180 gallon tank that I saw recently - wish I could remember where, & post the pic - it was absolutely breath-taking .... 8 beautiful adult solid red discus in a minimalist planted environment !
Made me gasp with the shockingly dramatic look of it.

That would be my absolute dream tank - not necessarily red or blue discus - but discus nonetheless !
OP, if you ever want to seriously think about it, I'd be more than happy to help you out - step by step, planning it all out - to be succesful, and have a fantastic-looking display tank !
Discus are not hard to keep, especially in that size of tank, and I'm positive you'd love it !

I've also heard discus are not as difficult as one thinks, as long as their parameters are met. Since they require higher temps, it can be a little more challenging to find appropriate tank mates and plants. But, they are/can be expensive fish & I've never kept one... just would love to have one some day.

here's the latest. got exact size. its a 125 gallon but still plenty big for me.

one thing im not happy about is the light is a 72" coralife CF 4x96W light with LED's. i checked out bulb replacements and nearly fell out of my chair

$100 per bulb! how often do CF lights last? about a year? that sucks.

so what to do now? i really dont wanna buy CF lights. will someone even buy this light now that T5-HO seem to be the craze

starting to re-think this now

and basically the 10000k actinic blue is useless for planted tanks right? also, i read somewhere that actinic lights can cause eye problems in fish?

i found a place that sells them for half the price. We have a LFS here in Canada that is almost 50% more than other places. how they stay in business is beyond me. They want $99 for a 34" 96W and the other place is charging $52 thats a no brainer lol.

If it was decorated with the African theme I would be tempted by black and white angels to represent Zebra and then Neon Orange Cory Catfish to represent the lions, especially since cory's like to lounge on flat surfaces. Just a thought
