Do I really need a CO2 system in my ten gallon planted tank? Will the plants do alright without it?

No, you don't really need a CO2 system to grow plants.

You will need CO2 (and fertilizers) if the tank has a lot of light over it, because without it plants will starve and algae will take over.

You will need CO2 if you want to grow demanding plants like Glossostigma.

Adding CO2 will grow greener and bigger plants, but no, you don't really need it. There are many nicely planted tanks without added CO2.

Only downfall i've seen with CO2 for smaller tanks is having to constantly trim the plants as they'll overgrow the tank
