Walnut shelf for 12g long
Hey folks
I'm relatively new to the hobby or craft of planted tanks/inverts. Until I discovered Takashi Amano by chance one afternoon on a design blog, I never would have dreamt of putting a "fish tank" in my furniture studio. Amano's tanks and those that I have run across since learning about him have made me realize that this is quite a wonderful process and dialog with nature. I designed and built this shelf to hold a 12g long planted tank. All the mechanicals will penetrate thru the wall and be housed on the other side. It's Figured Black Walnut, 24" wide (widest point), 80" long and 2" thick. |

I can sit on it without the supports flexing.

Maybe it's just the picture , but it looks like the tank will over hang parts at the front ?

Love the look, you'll have to do a tank journal and share the process with us!

Thanks! I started a tank journal for this setup. It's called Christof OEBT 12g long. It's going to take some time to get this all set up but I'll post pictures of the shelf in that journal as I progress.

I love walnut, and that's a pretty slab!
Aside from all the aquarium stuff, can I ask what braces you used to support your slab? I have two bookmatched live edge slabs that are 77" long, 15" wide at the narrowest measurement, and 1" thick. I am putting them just under the sill of my living room windows for "cat benches", a place for my two cats to hang out & watch the world go by (I have 68" of window on each side of my living room, one bench per window). I can't decide if I want to "float" the walnut and have open floor underneath, or use it as lids on a boxed in seating bench for extra storage. I have a constant fear of warp and twist in my head because my slabs are only 1" thick so I will probably go with the storage bench, but I'd love to see a pic of the underneath where your braces are!
