dont use white sand with shrimp, they color better with dark substrate. Use a black sand =D!

My shrimp disappeared on white. Plants look good though.

I feel you, I have dark sub and cant tell if there is 10 or 100 shrimp, and theres over 100.

try Craigslist - I purchased a few decent RCS from a guy in Kenmore Square that seems to put some up for sale periodically - there are several other sellers I have seen on CL in the past few months...
