I use stress guard on my betta, it helps the fins grow back and chills him out. i wish i had betta prozac for him.

mabj, first time i saw it i thought his fin got caught in the filter. it actually looks like something ate their fin - you see a ragged edge. right now my half moon looks horrible. it's been 2 weeks and he still looks pretty bad. normally within a day or two they grow back. betta are weird fish. i've had a few each with different personalities.

my current guy is very attached to me and gets pissed if i travel or get busy and don't have my morning coffee with him. he kills ANYTHING in his tank and plays hunter all day. when i go to feed him he jumps toward my hand to 'grab' the food (full body out of the water) so i keep the water VERY low in his bowl. super smart, and likes me to re-arrange his tank every few weeks. he also is a heavy sleeper, try and wake him up before he's ready and you can't - and if you DO manage he is PISSED and nasty then gives you his back for a few days (and yes, that means more fin chewing). if you try and take a photo of one of the other fish he splashes and jumps to get your attention - it's all about him.
-- he is VERY high maintenance. if he was my first betta prob would have never had others - i love him but he's a bit demanding.

Provided your test kits are right.
Several large w/cs later and the problem still exists. If it was pathogenic flora not only did the reproduce amazingly but survived your sterilizer and left no marks at all on your shrimp!
Can't see it

From Seachem...
Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels...

Since you added extra prime that rules out heavy metals from supply or they are so high that you are also in danger. Personally, I wouldn't add more chelating agents. If I did it would be sphagnum moss to a filter but I don't think it's required.

Purigen is pretty aggressive at removing stuff too.

Since they were eating, it wasn't hyper toxic.

However the wood may be suspect.

I have pulled the wood, i found 4 shrimp alive, they were eating other stuff not the wood alge.

fish is fine.

either the extra large purigen bag did it, or ????

i know my water is fine to drink (we test it) ... and as i said we also have a 3 micron whole house filter (just a step below reverse osmosis)

thinking since the wood and alge was in there when the tank was treated, and did do a few drops of alge killer a month or so ago (did nothing) who knows.

odd some shrimp survived (but cherry are pretty hardy)

I have the UV off right now as i'm adding stability (so many water changes i figure counts as new cycle) ...

question is UV okay for shrimp?

UV is fine for shrimp. I've used it myself for removing green water at times.

Water doesn't contain the beneficial bacteria needed to "cycle" a tank.

And unfortunately, you can't always move a shrimp from tank to tank without acclimating unless those tanks are 100% connected, share the same filtration, same substrate, etc. Even slight differences can be problematic.

so.. that translates to .. umm ... no

but i do move the shrimp around normally no problem

Somewhatshocked, okay i thought the water did contain some good stuff. i have bio balls in the filter already just thought it would "help"

if they weren't cherry shrimp i wouldn't just toss them in, but those buggers are pretty hardy. The water parms "test" the same, but i'm sure there are differences.

i'll keep that in mind.

Some shipments of 'decorative wood' are treated by quarantine authorities in many countries. Might not affect fish (baring Loricariidae) but could well affect grazers feeding on flora directly on the wood.

If you putting Stability in the tank you're fine. Provided it's not to old.

I'm guessing most UV units are useless. A Chinese manufacturer can bodgy up a 'design' then claim it's 'designed' to work even if it doesn't. Then list the effects of UVG (but not this particular unit) on the box.

If you get one that does work well, then to say, as many people do, that they don't affect nitrophilic bacteria in the column prior to adhesion is a nonsense.

One that does work would be useful in killing ich trophonts or some definite outbreak I suppose, but it's a bit indiscriminate for me. Kill 'em all the good and the bad.

i needed a hob filter and for 45$ it came with UV figured i'd give it a try.. didn't do a darn thing IMO.

it wasn't a 'shipped' piece of drift wood, got it from a friend who lives by the great lakes.

i think your right though only those who ate off of it died... it's out..

okay fish is fine... 3 shrimp are fine.. one more just died...
and by died i mean in his tracks standing there! - like a statue

changed water, changed filter (i like the redsea mingon60 beter then the upaqua 15 UV)

tore out the driftwood, cleaned tank, added some distilled H20 (i normally use tap) added some of the medal remover... NO IDEA..

fish is happy as a fish... other then she wants friends...

so what ever it is it's only affecting shrimp...

** i did not change out the biological filter moved it from old to new)
