Substrat in Substrate?

I recently set up a nano tank using Black Diamond Blasting Grit. I had some extra Eheim Substrat bio media that I put under the substrate. I put it under the side I have a slope on, hoping that would help it retain shape and also have more surface area for beneficial bacteria.
Bad idea?
I haven't done much else to the tank, nothing planted yet. Should I remove these and just continue using them in my filter?

Is there anything else budget friendly that I can mix into my current substrate to benefit my future plants?

Any advice is much appreciated.
