My Ebi crashed.

I've had a very busy month.

Bilateral cataract surgeries, blind in both eyes. Then seeing clearly in one, at least distantly, then finally in both. Distantly.

After the surgeries came, healing and recuperation. I see distance perfectly now, close up is still very fuzzy. I return for an eye exam and a new glasses prescription later this month.

While in the healing process, unbeknownst to me, my Fluval Ebi tank was going down the drain. I didn't notice until Thursday that things had made some big changes recently.

This tank had been full of a mixture of shrimp, all breeding like crazy. I found Thursday that things had made a terrible turn for the worse. When I dropped food in the tank no one showed up for dinner.

Tonight I tore the tank apart. I found roughly twenty live shrimp and two crabs. All of the snails had died.

I thoroughly cleaned the tank, I removed the Fluval Shrimp substrate and replaced it with Up Shrimp Sand. I put one gallon of treated tap water and six gallons of distilled water in the tank.

In a container sits about twenty shrimp (and two crabs) that I was able to save. Most very small juveniles. I will add them to the tank tomorrow after slowly acclimating them to the new parameters.

Among the shrimplets are some cherries and chocolates. All of the very prolific crystals died.

Fingers crossed things make a turn for the best.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! Oh man that sucks! I'm sorry you had that happen, dude! At least you discovered it before every one was gone.

I really like UP sand right now, so a huge plus with no ammonia leaking and adding the shrimp in ASAP.

... and I just found one of the crabs munching down on a red rili shrimp.

Life, however temporary, for crabs and shrimp in a tiny plastic box that hangs on a fish tank is equivalent to a shotgun and fish in a barrel, it seems.

if the snails started to die first that could have cause the start of the problem cause as snails die off they cause huge water quality issuses. ive had it happen more than once. im gettin ready to restart a couple tanks myself and a totaly new one so i wish you luck rob

I was thinking along those lines myself. (Damn snails. )

Luckily, I have some crystals in another tank, and gobs of black Chocolates in another. Gonna fish some of those out and put 'em in the Ebi soon. Thinking that the crabs will do better in a tank that's not housing breeding shrimp, too.

This is a Fluval Ebi (shrimp) tank. The filter on the right came with the kit. I've wrapped it with a bag to protect shrimplets.

There is also a dual sponge filter.

To me it looks like a red cherry, but I guess I can't tell unless there is a side profile. For me red tiger babies usually have a more distinctive stripes when growing up.

Maybe you had a micro crab die and dug somewhere and ammonia bombed the tank. The biggest issue I had with red claw crabs back in the day was that they would dig and hide after a bad molt and die...poisoning the water like a stupid fw clam


Like no joke I found rilis and pfr's to be more durable than ramshorns....when I put like 150 shrimp in a tubberware with snails and then sealed them and accidently gassed them 24 hours later.......only things that were still living were like 10 cherries/rilis. Everything else died.
