Great white sharks hit their prey on the surface bite & release allowing the kill to die then they eat it. I believe the theory is less chance of a thrashing victim putting the sharks eye out or harming it in some way. Which is pretty hard to imagine happening which 5000 pound of force cutting the prey in 1/2.
for something so big and built to kill, they are more or less pussies. if you present yourself as a threat at all they don't tend to attack because it'd not worth the risk.
that doesnt mean I'm getting anywhere near them or their territory. I had a mild panic attack getting into the water around the Dominican Republic when my wife wanted to go snorkling, so i'm pretty sure if I saw a great white (or a nurse shark for that matter) i'd crap myself and get eaten.
