Coconut coir substrate?

Anyone try using patches of this in deep substrate sections? Then cap with blasting sand?

Will it eventually surface?

I've read that it has a lot of salt in it.

You can get the kind with the salt rinsed out of it, hydroponic grade. It is very lightweight. I haven't tried capping it.

I would think that may be an awful lot of organic material to put in there all at one time. I don't have the experience with MTS, but I believe the reason you go through the process of mineralizing it is to get rid of the excess organics. It seems like it would impossible to control the amount of ammonia and other chemicals leeching out as it decays.

Please do some more research. It does not leach ammonia or nitrates.
