Never used Ehiem 2026 from 2001-Still Good?

My name is Stephanie. This is my first post here. I was into planted tanks in the late 90s and was planning for an awesome 75 gallon tank in 2001. I had all my equipment purchased. Life events happened and I never set the tank up. Now in 2013 I want to get back into the hobby. I have a never used Ehiem 2026 bought in August of 2001 from an online retailer. Should I trust the internal parts of this after all these years? This thing is still not put together. Perfectly clean in the box. I don't want the thing ruining my carpet and floors though.

Also, can I trust old heaters and powerheads bought around the same time? Or should I just buy all new?

Thanks,

Stephanie

Yea, I would think its fine, just make sure you lube up the o rings. Maybe while you test the can fit it in a Tupperware bin just to be safe.
I would think the other equipment should be ok also, just test them out before you fully set up your tank.
Good luck

Can't think of any reason why it shouldn't be good. Ditto with the lubing of the seals though.

Thanks for the responses. Any particular lubricant that is best?

Regular petroleum jelly would be fine. If the o-ring has been in the open and not in sealed packaging, it may have dried out and could need replacing. I had a canister that was put away for a while and leaked until the o-ring was replaced.

I actually think it could be very dangerous. If you'll ship it to me, I'll make sure that it is disposed of properly.

Seriously, I agree that it should be fine.

I'd be a little nervous about the heaters, just because heaters are funny things and can cause an awful lot of problems if they malfunction.
