Rock hunting
Decided to go up to the hill behind my house for some rock huntings.

For outcrops like that, you could check a geologic map - it shows where the various bedrock formations surface, and from that you can tell what rocks/minerals you are likely to find on a given hill.
It doesn't work so well for IDing loose stuff in stream beds, or imported fill, stuff on the beach, etc., but should be fairly reliable for in-situ bedrock. |
