New betta :)
My hubby got me a betta for Valentine's Day. This little guy caught my eye at the local Petsmart over a month ago. He was super tiny then. When he was still there, I had to bring him home. He's about 1.5 inches long now, including his tail. His cup was marked as a Half Moon, so I'm curious how he'll develop.
We've tentatively named him Sherlock because he actually used his little fishy brain to figure out how to knock a decent sized snail off the glass. I've got him in a large gallon jar for now since he's still not full sized. I hope to have a 10 gallon set up before he's grown.

Glad you saved this one from a sure death!
I think its a HM female, looks female to me. I have bred many Bettas and the fins on this fish are more the type that females have. If you look under the belly and there is a white spot, then it is indeed a female. Lovely steel blue color either way though. Congrats on Shirlock/Sherlock |

Thanks! Ultimately, I don't care if he's a girl or a boy, but there is no white spot under the belly. He was with the males and they charged us for a male, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Gotta love a surprise!

Your boy is gorgeous, Wicca! If he turns out like that, I'll be happy.
Thanks, Tete!

hes nice. hes likely a delta tail, not halfmoon. its the same genetic trait, just not expressed the same way. a halfmoon (HM) is a delta that can open its tail up to 180 degrees, a superdelta (SD) opens to just under that, and a delta cant go too far above 90. over-halfmoons (OHM), or rosetails/feathertails, can open their tails even further.

I was wondering that, Marko. It doesn't look like his tail will get that wide. I'm trying to learn about the varieties, but there's so much to learn! Thank you for your input. Took a look at your bettas... they're gorgeous. Let me know next time you have some up on Aquabid.

the plant is marsilea minuta i think that is how you spell it any way. some tanks it looks like that and stays really small and in my bigger tanks it gets really big and has the clover look to it
