Loach Id needed

So I picked up 3 loaches labeled as "Spotted sand loach/vietnamese"

These guys are cute as heck, and totally act different in my tank then the tank at the store.

They are all over the place, swimming up and down against my glass, acting much like when cory cats do when they are happy.


I will get some photos of them in the tank in a few if I can.. They dont seem to want to hold still.








I got three of them, and figured if they did well, I would go back and pick up several more

These fish are said to need cooler water than can easily be achieved in most home aquaria but perhap's,,they can do well at ambient room temp's in low 70's F?

I at least knew it was a cobitis, what I am asking is what one exactly.


As far as temp goes, my tank's set between 77 and 80, old heater isn't working as well as it used to. The new one should be here today.


They seem quite fine with the temp, active, searching for food. They swam right up to the tank front this morning when I feed a tinny amount of food. They seem to love crushed snails as well

they kinda look like dojo/weather loahces but with pattern lol. might be in the same family but they are cool lookin. im sure low to mid 70's would be fine for them even my hillstreams that are suposed to like cool water do good in my 55 gal angel tank thats between 75-80

Hmmm...I couldn't quite tell what's the exact species, but it might be Cobotis biwae. I'm not 100% sure on that.

That pattern on them looks like so many, but the small details throw them all out. My guess is Cobitis taenia - Spined Loach

Since mine wont hold still, I went back and got photos of them in their tank, and picked up a c02 system from my friend who works there.

After a quick snack, and some sneaky ninja moves on my part, I finally got a good shot of them in my tank!

I don't know the scientific name either, but these exact fish are sold around me as "speckled loaches" What is their behavior like? Do they act like weather loaches, or kuhlis, or botia? I have always kind of wanted some, but not being able to figure out what exactly they were I was hesitant to get any.

I've never personally owned any other loach, or anything of the sort.
The three I picked up are pretty chill. They dont bother anyone, always swimming around searching for food to eat. Swimming up and down against he glass now and then.

They pretty much sit there and look pretty haha

@QuoVadis, most cobitis are just as docile as kuhlis. Just watch out if you have any aggressive bottom dwellers. Schistura's are just one aggressive/territorial bottom dweller that I would not mix with them.

@Kitsune_Gem, try to keep the tank temp down if you can. These guys love blood worms. Beautiful loaches, nice find!!

The temp can't be lowered due to the other inhabitants in it. So far they seem okay with it. The tank cools off a bit at night, but not much.
