firstly what does active carbon do and secondly can i run a walstad tank with a active carbon in filter thanks

Activated carbon removes chemicals from the water. It has also been shown/linked to cause a disease in fish.

It can be used during a tanks start-up to remove tanin's and other impurities but it's probably not a good idea once you have live stock or long term..

(It's also used in RO/DI systems at times)
