is having fish tank sand good with non-sword plants

I have a sand mix and never had any problems. I found all the warnings about sand just not to be true

I find it difficult to keep clean. In a coarser substrate, fishpoop falls through the cracks and can be used for plant nutrition or vacuumed out. It is just laying on top of the sand which I don't like.

well what is a good substrate for small 5 and 10 gallon tanks that is not like 40 bucks for 25 lbs...

There is a lot of personal preference out there... If you are looking for something cheap, sandblasting sand has been recommended, which is in grain size between playsand and pea gravel. I would put something with a high CEC under it, like Profile. Others would put laterite underneath it. I add Jobes sticks around the root feeders to make them happy. Lots of personal preferences.

where could you even find eco-complete. pet smart ? lfs? or will small 2 -3 mm gravel do
