Yes it is. I've had it happen to my A. Coffefolia before. It is far more common above the water surface and they may not even open below the surface. I'm sure they do sometimes, tho.

Very cool! I haven't even fertilized the tank in a long time (as evidenced by the black hairy algae there on the left). It's almost to the surface now. Maybe if the stem gets a tad taller...

In my 55g, I regularly get them to flower. They usually open and look pretty. I trim them off after a while because they stop growing and just become algae magnets.
