i did a standpipe and it stopped the noises. I would do that esp if you don't want to change design. there are several standpipe designs; durso, stockman, and the gurgle buster

I tried the durso and its way to fast for my pump and its rated for way over 200GPH (my pump).

I put a T on the top of my standpipe, mostly because I wanted to double the surface area of the opening to minimize the potential for it getting plugged (e.g., by a loose leaf). As an unintended bonus, simply adding the T eliminated the gurgling noise that I had with the straight pipe.
