Austin Texas Fissidens sp.
I went out and collected some fissidens from Town Lake today. Not sure what species it is but it's a rather large one. It was found fully submerged on a rock. It seems to grow rather well there. It was in a big huge mat. Only grabbed a handful though and lost a bunch while rinsing it in the lake. It was fulllllllll of amphipods and other critters. Will post pics in a little.

Ooh rah! Plant hunter! I've bot managed to find aquatic moss locally, but I've tracked down various plants and I've got a few streams to check in the spring. Any neat critters in the mix?

there were amphipods and like damselfly nymph in there. Definitely going to go check it out again in the spring when stuff grows better...gonna bring my rod too there were some huge bass in there.I'm keeping it in a sealed jar for now to see if anything creepy emerges. I gave it a good long rinse in tap water too when I got back so I think it's pretty clean now.
The mosses I've seen really like cooler, clear water. They'll attach to rocks in semi shaded areas. |

That's awesome, whereabouts around town lake did you find it? I've picked up some cool driftwood from around there but I've never seen moss.

I think you may be correct...Hmm. This calls for another trip to the lake for more searching then. I know for sure there's fissidens somewhere in there...It's all over central texas. I know there's a park where some HAPS members collected it in San Marcos.
Although are all fontinalis temperature sensitive? The lake I collected these from gets very very warm in the summer. |
