Switching to a planted tank I have a few questions..

Ok I have a 58 gallon tank that currently has a few fish in it mainly platys which i am not keeping as soon as I can trade or sell them to some one and gravel substrate... I am wanting to start a planted tank and eventually add fish back in. My first question is about adding a plant substrate to my existing substrate and how much to use.. My gravel bed is currently about one and a half inches thick. Would it be safe to add the plant substrate with out tearing down the tank. I was looking at using Carb Sea Eco complete or Seachem Fluorite. Also how many ponds of this would I have to use.
Thank you in advance for any and all information you can share.

I think the official answer is yes you can add Eco-Complete to an established aquarium, however I feel it is best to replace all your substrate.

As for how much, that depends on how you plan to scape your tank and how you want it to look. Here is a Substrate calculator that can help you.

I use Eco-complete. Never used Fluorite. I chose Eco-Complete because it didn't require extensive washing. Just open the bag and dump it in. Also didn't need to worry about ammonia spikes or the substrate breaking down over time. Purchased on-line for like $19 per 20 lb bag, free shipping.

Good luck.

I have a tank about 2 months old and used eco-complete and love it! Clouded my water a bit for maybe 4 or 5 hours and then it was crystal clear. I was debating between eco and flourite like you and didn't want to deal with the cloudiness/ washing of flourite. I've heard pros and cons of both products. The thicker the substrate, the more you have to work with as far as aquascaping and such. I would plan out your decor and go from there. Good luck!
