Storing fish food

I have a variety of food for my betta and for my community tank fish. I have read it should be tossed after 6 months. I don't have many fish, I'm sure I will not use 1/4 of the food by then.

I was thinking of putting a teaspoon of each into one of the daily pill minder containers, as they have 7 compartments that snap shut.

I am considering putting the rest of the food, in the original containers, down in a quart Mason jar which has a tight fitting lid, and keeping it in the freezer. I would refill the pillbox as needed.

Our dry cat food and dog food have few, if any, preservatives, and our vet told us to store it in the freezer. I get a weeks with out at a time to use. I keep flour, spices, and other dry goods in the freezer.

I'm thinking it would stay fresh indefinitely in the freezer.

Has anyone else stored dry fish food this way?

i buy food in bulk from kens fish and i love the ziplock bags that has the air pump with them. you put the food in the back and suck all the air out of the back and toss it in the freezer. last forever that way

I also store my bulk fish food in the freezer with good results.

Juli, rather than using the 7 day pill minder for your fish food, you can get an empty shaker type spice jar at most department stores. They usually have a perforated plastic lid and you can use a piece of clear tape to plug off the holes so it only dispenses the amount you need per feeding.

I also use empty vitamin bottles that have a flip open lid and just cut a small circle of fiberglass window screen and insert it inside the lid. The small .5mm NLS food that I use dispenses easily through the holes in the correct amount.

The most important things to remember about fish food is to keep it dry and away from heat and light.

Thanks for the great ideas. I'll try them out. I think I have most of the items recommended on hand already.

I buy disposable contact lens cases in bulk for storing daylily pollen. I can try using them also. They are air/water tight.

I really appreciate it!
