Shrimp substrate
Okay, I am going to change out my substrate in my yellow / CRS 20 gallon tank. What substrate should I go with. Who has had good results with what? Thanks. I'm just going to put them in a 10 gallon temporarily while I change it.

Get something neutral. In my experience yellows were not very accommodating to really low ph. I had ADA aquasoil with a really low pH and it didn't go so well. I think you would be better off with something around 7.0-7.4 pH.

6.8, my fluval ss keeps it at 6.8. There are always those bad batches though...

I'm more concerned with crystals. My yellows are pretty hardy and I can put them in another tank if need be.

I rather go with ADA soil because it buffers longer and you don't need to replace as soon. I got 3 bags to get a "decent" amount for my 29gal. My tank only has moss, so the depth didn't really matter. :p

my fss is great been a year almost and still takes my water 7.5 out of the tap down to 6. i would get 2 to be on the safe side. i had a 4.4 lb bag and put it in a 1.5 gal cube and a 5 gal and it wasnt really deep.

I use 2 FSS 8.8 lbs in a 20 long and it is perfect.

2 bags it is. Now I have a project for next weekend. One more question. Did you rinse yours or not? I've read both ways on that.

I have Fluval Shrimp substrate in my Ebi tank. It's great stuff, if you ask me.
It was a bit dusty even after a rinse, took a while for that dust to settle. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S III using Tapatalk 2

Avoid FSS at all costs. It isn't worth it in the long run... ADA aquasoil may seem to be more expensive but think about the amount your getting...
21 lbs for 50 dollars.. 2.28 a lb and FS is around 22 dollars for 8.8 lbs which is 2.5 a lb. Don't forget ADA aqua soil is better for plants and CRS.

i have had the best breeding with stratum and my plants like it too. some have had problems with it but some have not i am one that it has done really well for. i never could find the aquasoil and online it was way more than $50 for 21lbs pluse shipping. so its what ever you can get and try it.

I just put the Fluval in my tank yesterday. I rinsed it first and got a ton of dark sediment out of it. I'm glad I did. Mine cleared up in a few hours and never got terribly cloudy to begin with.
