How to siphon a planted tank?

I see tutorials where people stick the siphon in gravel and a bunch of waste comes out... What do you do if you have a planted carpet of hair grass? What then?

You can wave your hand or the end of the siphon above the substrate to stir things up and suck out the excess waste.

With a planted tank, you don't have to worry about vacuuming waste too much, the waste will be broken down and used as fertilizer for the plants.

I've also used a turkey baster (or it's smaller equivalent for nano tanks) to direct a small burst of water to blow debris/snail poop out into the water column or into a more open area so it can be siphoned out.

Turkey baster works for me too, also you can use it for feeding fish anywhere in the tank.

During feeding they dig around and stir up the substrate lifting up some mulm and I just let my filters do it's thing.
