Buenos Aires Tetra spawn

So sometime over the last week, who knows when, the Buenos Aires Tetras at my work spawned, we sold all of the adults days ago, and when I was going to put the new ones in the tank, I saw a ton of small little itty bitty tinnie tinny babies. This tank only holds Buenos Aries, so I know that they are them.

So I ran to the back frantic, grabbing a brine shrimp net, fished out as many as I could, tossed them in a cup with some plants, and bought a breeder net for when I got home.

They are currently living in my 10 gallon tank in a net with some moss an anachris (sp?)

I am not sure how many will live, or if they will even make it to a good size, but hey I figured there is no harm in trying as if I left them in the tank, the new adults would have had a snack..

How common is it for these to spawn in a home aquarium? We do not do anything special, flake food (omega one) 6 days a week, and frozen blood worms (SF Bay) once a week. Tanks are kept about 78* f. No other fish in the tank.

Here are some crappy phone photos

The babies seem to be settling in quite well.

I am still a bit unsure on what to feed them as they are so tinny I fear most foods would be way to large for them. Even newly hatched brine shrimp seem larger than them. I am hoping there is enough micro organisms on the moss and bit of anarichus(sp?) for now.

My Fire Red Shrimp are all over the net like "oooo whats dis? A new snack?"

The net kinda makes the 10 gallon crowded, but as the tanks been running for almost a year now, making it a bit safer for babies than the 29 gallon.

They seem fat and happy this morning. The two I was able to see in the tangle of moss where in the middle of pooping so that tells me they are snacking on something.

micro worms work well but would probably go though the net or just fine crushed flake will work. just kinda powder it up and you might put an air stone in the net cause they can get kinda stagnant some times or put it in the flow of the filter.

I do not feed flake, I use new life spectrum pellets, I suppose I could hammer that into a powder. They are sitting almost directly under my filter thanks to how the thanks set up, so no need to worry about stagnant water. : D

Put some plant trimmings in there for them to pick microfoods off of and feed live BBS sparingly.

I have bolivian ram fry currently and am trying out Hikari first bites. I mix first bites in a cup with tank water and spot feed with a pipette. I think this might work for you as well. Good Luck!

The little buggers are getting bigger and are not so itty bitty. Still small though
