Where to get KNO3
Anyone know if I would be able to get KNO3(potassium nitrate) locally? I know I can order online but thought maybe I could find it in town first. Also my plants are lacking nutrients. I have some macro/micro mix left that a friend gave me. Would that help with lack of nutrients in the tank or so I just purchase KNO3? Sorry I am a new to dry ferts.

KNO3, like the other dry ferts is an agricultural product, sold in large bags to farmers. You might find large amounts (enough for many years, or to share with an aquarium club) in farm supply stores, or get a cup or so from a farmer.
KNO3 is also sold as a stump remover, but read the label VERY carefully. There are other products that are also stump removers, but are not KNO3. You could also try hydroponic stores. |

Be careful what you buy. Terrestrial plant fertilizers usually have urea as a source of ammonia that breaks down into nitrogen compounds in the soil. I would be willing to bet that hydroponic stores will have zilch for aquarium plants. You used to be able to buy stump remover with NO3 in it but since 911 well.. You're probably going to be buying it online..

The agricultural KNO3 is often in "prills", which are coated pellets. Not as convenient to measure, and slower to dissolve. Something to consider before you buy what will usually be a huge bag.

My potassium nitrate is in an old Green Light Stump Remover jar which I bought at a good nursery, HD and Lowe's don't carry it. Be warned, it costs twice as much as buying online. My jar cost $8 for a pound and online it costs $3 a pound.

you can get a 1lb of prills from dudadiesel.com for 9.95 including shipping.
I've no idea how long a lb is going to last me, but I bet it's a very long time. |

Thanks everyone. I'm gonna stop by my local HD and see if I can get my hands on some stump remover.
