What shrimp to buy

So my LFS has been bringing in crystal reds, and tangerine tigers regularly. They go for around $12 each, unless i buy 4 or more in which case i get a discount. Is this too much to pay for them? Also theyre going into a 10gallon ( http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...666&highlight= ) with pygmy cories, scarlet badis, and some amano shrimp. I know the scarlet badis will eat a lot of the babies, but i have a pretty big moss clump where some of them can hide out along with the progressing HC carpet. So is it worth it to get one of these fancier shrimp, or should i just pick up some red cherries?

THanks

Depends upon the quality/grade of shrimp. Some Crystals would be cheap at $12 per, some would be outrageously overpriced (but maybe not by LFS standards).

$12 isn't bad for TTs in a retail shop, honestly, no matter the grade.

Crystals require pretty specific water parameters and aren't typically suited for tap water. So make sure your tank can support them before jumping into them.

How do I figure out what grade the shrimp are?
Tank parameters: pH: 6.0-6.5 Temp: 75-78F Ammonia: 0 Nitrates: ~30ppm Nitrites: ~0
I do weekly 3-5 gallon water changes using conditioned tap water and some distilled water.

Anything below SS is overpriced at $12 retail.

Though - and this is not being flippant - it seems like you're really new to shrimp and should go check out the sticky here in the shrimp forum to learn about shrimp, grades, water parameters and general care. It'll be hugely helpful to you to check that thread out for sure.

Read the sticky. I think I'll stick with the cherries for now, and move onto more expensive shrimps later on.

one thing you should really think about is temp. most shrimp like it cooler around 65-70. cherries could probably handle higher temps but the higher the temp the more a chance for bacterial infections. so just be on the look out for that. and i would try the cheapest cherries you can first to find out if they will get eaten. no sence in spending $3-$5 per shrimp only to have them snacks. i dont think the pygmy corys will eat them but the scarlet badis might and even go after adults. they may not be able to eat one whole but might tear it up to eat it. so just be carfull with it. that is why most of us shrimp people have more than one tank and only keep shrimp in them
