set the spawning tank back up in new brunswick last night, and put the original pair in (female separated). released them this morning 2 hours ago, and they are now already embracing (or trying to, they are really bad at it, but they will figure it out). pics to come later at the end of the spawning.

see this is what i remember their spawning to be like. quick, easy, courtship, not the weeklong trials with various pairs. this time it went super easy, to make up for the earlier mishaps i guess. should have wrigglers withing 36 hours of introduction.

I love breeding Bettas. Sometimes the problem becomes what to do with all them after they are full grown. =) My house became filled with small containers. I was trolling the 99 cent store on a monthly basis until I ordered to go clear plastic soup containers from a restaurant supply store.

i ordered a bunch of quart containers from aquabid when i jarred my last spawn. now i got enough to jar 100 males at the same time. not that i will. dont have room/time to raise that many fish from this spawn.

the fish are still trying to figure out the whole embrace thing. the female was really condition and is very thick with eggs, so the male has his work cut out for him. but worst case scenario she starts releasing eggs before they really get the hang of, gets skinnier, and then he manages to wrap around her and the second half of the eggs are viable and fertilized.

so they stopped spawning 2-3 hours ago, but i dont know if there will be any fry. there was not a single truely successful embrace, and i doubt many eggs got fertilized, if any. to confirm this, the male now has a HUGE belly full of eaten eggs. he may not necessarily be an egg eater, as they are supposed to eat unfertilized eggs to keep them from spoiling and harming the viable ones. i guess itll take 24 hours for me to find out if there are any wrigglers.

here are pics from the spawn:

Fishy porn. Great action shots. That female is definitely plump.

thanks guys.
unfortunately the nest has been abandoned by the male, which i take as a sign that he knows there is nothing viable in there, likely since he might not have even gotten the chance to release sperm.
im gonna try again with a smaller female on thursday.

the new spawn seems to have concluded. i caught the tail end of it. the male appears to be very interested in his bubble nest, so im hoping his interest is in caring for the eggs which he fertilized, and not in eating the eggs. im hopeful as i saw him pic some eggs off the floor and then swim up and bury his face in the nest, hopefully depositing them there.
here are pics:

Which parents finally ended up getting it right? The balog and which other?

i dont know for sure if they got it right yet. in 24 hours, if i see wrigglers, then i will know. for now im just giving the benefit of the doubt.
the balog and one of the smaller sisters. the first choice was too big and he couldnt wrap around her, even though she released a ton of eggs.
hopefully this one allowed for a successful spawn. if not, i may give up.

When you take those close shots of the bubbles, are you shooting eggs?
