how hard are this guy to keep and breed.....


my tank parameter:

ph 7.4
kh - 4
gh - 15
temp 78-80F

right out of the tap ..treated with nothing special

they will stay with my rabbit snails

hard water.... lot of algae on teh glass?

good or no good?

either this or go for green shrimp...

What kind of sulawesi ? Cardinals?

Most do best at 8+ ph.

Malawa adapt pretty well to lots of different conditions, although I keep mine in a gh of 6.

PH 8.0-8.2 TDS 350 and up.KH 6-8,Temp 82-83F.A lot of algae.No other shrimps with them.They love spirulina powder and tabs.

Funny, I always wanted some in Florida but having a tds out of the tap of <30 and a ph of 5.5 always kept me away... Now that I moved the tds is ~350 from the tap and ph is 8.2, I may have to get some!

Good general statement, however not accurate for all of them.



My Malawa for instance are in a tank with very little algae (I think the moss sucks up the nutients), Temp 78F, TDS 250 and below, and can be kept with other shrimp without a problem. For them Jake's Sticks, bee pollen, etc are fine.



Other Sulas are more defined in what they eat- such as the Harlequin which is thought to have a symbiotic relationship with live sponges, and so on. (Planetinverts pic) And also may be more defined with TDS and other params.

It really depends which Sula you decide to get, and understand the information for that specific shrimp.

Malawa are one of the easiest, Harlequins are one of the hardest.

i have malawa in one of my 20 long same parameter ..got them when they were small but now older.. im not even sure if they are breeding or not but i do see them often..maybe more than before?

Do you have a well planted tank? I see mine out all the time, but I only have moss in the corner. Not skittish at all. Mine out breed my cherries, so if yours are not breeding I'm thinking something maybe off?

The site says no problem on those, but how many times have I read that about other shrimp that are hard to keep?

i have alot moss on rocks stack behind the back..currently with cherry

ofc i see mine pretty much out by the driftwood..they have big boogie eye that stand out..lol

i am emailing the guy to ask for his water parameter...

Curious about the substrate used with these guys. How does one keep the pH at these high levels especially with driftwood in the tank?

Tannins are what lowers pH AFAIK so if the driftwood isn't leeching tannins it's not going to affect the pH. I have a tank of PFR and cray with a fairly good sized piece of driftwood in there and pH is 8.2 or so. Pool filter sand as substrate in that tank. I really like the looks of these and may entertain the idea of getting them to toss into that tank. Hmmmm.

I have a big piece of driftwood in the tank. A lots of stones and the substrate is white sand.

I use inert substrate because my water ph winds up 8+.

I plan on using aragonite sand in a cardinal tank in the near future, that should keep the pH 8+ steady.

My ph is at lowest 8.2 out of the tap, so I don't have to tamper with it at all. My cardinals which will be shipped next week, so hopefully soon I will have a colony going!
